REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst February 28, 2016 By John Whitesides and Amanda Becker COLUMBIA, S.C. (Reuters) – Fresh off a runaway win in the South Carolina primary, Democrat Hillary Clinton turned her sights to a possible match-up with Republican front-runner Donald Trump in the Nov. 8 presidential election. Without mentioning Trump’s name, the former secretary of state made it clear on Saturday she was already thinking about taking on the real estate mogul whose recent string of victories made him the favorite to be the Republican nominee for the White House race. Clinton shot down Trump’s campaign slogan of “Make America Great Again” and his plans to build a wall on the U.S.-Mexican border. “Despite what you hear, we don’t need to make America great again....

Tanzania to mark Women`s Day amid challenges

Image
Tanzania will celebrate the International Women’s Day on March 8 in an event aimed at honouring their  social, economic, cultural and political achievements, amid a chronic barrage of age-old problems facing the weak gender in a country reputed for its allegedly strong patrimonial culture.   They include gender-based violence, early and forced marriages, gender discrimination in employment, politics, education and even inheritance though the government has made milestones in addressing the issue. The fifth-phase government appears to be especially serious in ending the disparity by taking a stick from where the previous government of Jakaya Kikwete stopped, with President John Magufuli and his Vice, Samia Suluhu Hassan vowing to end all forms of gender and child rights abuse.  “My government will commit Sh50m every month to every village across the country to empower women and young people,” was a remark repeatedly uttered by President John Ma...

REUTERS/Jim Young February 23, 2016 By Doina Chiacu and Alana Wise WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Marco Rubio received boosts Monday in his drive to become the mainstream Republican alternative to front-runner Donald Trump, with a string of high-profile endorsements and missteps by rival Ted Cruz’s campaign. Rubio, who eked out a second-place finish in South Carolina’s primary by fewer than 1,000 votes over Cruz on Saturday, racked up endorsements from prominent Republicans including U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson and former presidential candidate Bob Dole. Rubio and Cruz came out of South Carolina with sharper criticism of Trump, who swept the Southern state with a comfortable margin of victory. At the same time, the two senators’ rivalry intensified – and soured. Cruz fired his ma...

(Reuters) – A Michigan man who worked as an Uber driver is due to be arraigned on Monday in the fatal weekend shootings of six people in Kalamazoo as police search for a motive in a case that raised questions about how the car service vets its drivers. An initial search indicated Jason Dalton, 45, had no criminal record and no known links to extremist groups. Prosecutors alleged Dalton randomly shot multiple times at people during a five-hour period on Saturday at an apartment complex, a car dealership and a Cracker Barrel restaurant in Kalamazoo, about 150 miles (240 km) west of Detroit. REUTERS/Al Diaz February 19, 2016 By Zachary Fagenson MIAMI (Reuters) – A Canadian diplomat’s teenage son will serve nine months in boot camp for his role in a drug-related shooting that killed his older brother last year but was spared a lengthy prison sentence under a plea deal accepted by a Florida judge on Friday. Marc Wabafiyebazu, 15, pleaded no contest to two counts of third-degree murder, aggravated assault and attempted armed robbery over the March 2015 botched marijuana deal. His older brother, 17-year-old Jean Wabafiyebazu, was killed along with a suspected drug dealer. Marc Wabafiyebazu has been jailed without bond since his March arrest. He and his brother had gone to a Miami-area home to buy an estimated $5,000 worth of marijuana, according to police reports. He was indicted by a Florida grand jury on one count ...

Obama announces historic Cuba visit, Republicans fume

U.S. President Barack Obama speaks at a news conference after the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Rancho Mirage, California February 16, 2016. REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque February 18, 2016 By Roberta Rampton and Nelson Acosta WASHINGTON/HAVANA (Reuters) – President Barack Obama on Thursday announced a historic visit to Cuba next month, speeding up the thaw in relations between the two Cold War former foes but igniting opposition from Republicans at home. In the first U.S. presidential trip to the Caribbean nation in nearly 90 years, Obama will meet with Cuban President Raul Castro, entrepreneurs, and “Cubans from different walks of life” during the trip on March 21 and 22, the White House said. After decades of animosity following Cuba’s 1959 revolution, the two countries agreed in 2014 to move to reopen ties. It was diplomatic feat that is likely to be a highlight of Obama’s foreign policy legacy along with the reachi...

REUTERS/Alexander Ermochenko February 13, 2016 By Robin Emmott and Shadia Nasralla MUNICH (Reuters) – Violence in eastern Ukraine is intensifying and Russian-backed rebels have moved heavy weaponry back to the front line, international monitors warned on Saturday as Moscow responded by accusing the West of dragging the world back 50 years. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev described East-West relations as having “fallen into a new Cold War” and said NATO was “hostile and closed” toward Russia, in the latest sign that peace efforts have made scant progress almost two years since Moscow annexed Crimea. “I sometimes wonder – are we in 2016 or 1962?,” Medvedev asked in a speech to the Munich Security Conference. Implementation of a deal agreed in Minsk a year a...

Clinton, Sanders clash over Obama as they vie for minority votes

Image
U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton visits a polling place in Manchester, New Hampshire February 9, 2016, the day of New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary. REUTERS/Brian Snyder February 13, 2016 By John Whitesides MILWAUKEE (Reuters) – Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders clashed sharply in a debate on Thursday over their support for President Barack Obama, with Sanders accusing Clinton of “a low blow” after she compared him to Republicans. As the Democratic race moves to states with large minority populations, both candidates openly courted black and Hispanic votes during a debate that was far more restrained and cordial than last week’s contentious debate in New Hampshire. In the sharpest exchange of the night, Clinton attacked Sanders for being too critical of Obama, who is extremely popular with the black voters who will play a big role in the outcome in South Carolina and other upcoming n...

Trump’s profanity may be fodder for rivals at Republican debate

Image
U.S. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a campaign stop in Tampa, Florida February 12, 2016. REUTERS/Mike Carlson February 13, 2016 By Steve Holland GREENVILLE, S.C. (Reuters) – Donald Trump will face pressure at a debate with his Republican rivals on Saturday night to show a more presidential side to his personality in South Carolina, where his frequent use of profanity has become an issue. With a week to go until South Carolina’s Republican primary vote on Feb. 20, the debate comes at a time of high anxiety for Trump’s opponents. Trump, who won New Hampshire handily on Tuesday after placing second in Iowa on Feb. 1, has a big lead in the polls in South Carolina. Unless he is slowed down, he could be in position to roll to his party’s presidential nomination for the Nov. 8 election. That means it is in the interests of Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Florida Senator Marco Rubio and former Florida Governor Jeb Bush to try to raise ques...
